A walk in the Old Town of Kavala

A walk that will enchant you and take you back in time… The cobbled streets, the sights, the endless view from above, the taverns and café-bars in the Old Town of Kavala, the well-known neighborhood of “Panagia”, it will make you love this city even more.

Start from Theodorou Poulidou Street, where you will come across the Imaret, a wonderful classic example of Islamic architecture from the 19th century. Its founder was Muhammad Ali, who created a religious, educational and charitable institution. Today it is a luxury hotel, ideal for enjoying a drink with the best view.

Proceed a few meters later, to the peninsula of Panagia, there you will find the square of Mohamed Ali, where the statue of him is located. The statue is the work of the sculptor Konstantinos Dimitriadis. His house is considered one of the most characteristic surviving examples of 18th century Ottoman architecture in Greece.

Continuing you will come across the Holy Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary in the historic district of Panagia. Its Holy Temple is located within the walls of the peninsula and was built in the year 1957 in the same place where the old one had been since the 15th century.

Shortly after, at the end of the Old Town peninsula, you will see the Lighthouse. Built at the end of the 19th century , it is a magnet for residents and visitors.

Below the lighthouse are the rocks, perfect for enjoying the blue horizon…

Continuing the walk, you will meet the Halil Bey complex. Today it is also known as “Old Music”, since the Kavala Philharmonic was hosted here in the 1930s-1940s.

At the top of the Old Town, there is the Kavala Fortress, one of the most important monuments of the city. It is definitely worth visiting and at some point enjoy the cultural events that take place in the outdoor theater of the Fortress.

Finally, going down from the Fortress you will come across the Arches, a trademark of the city. The medieval Aqueduct of the city, with a length of 270m. and a maximum height of 25m.
